Orchestre Tropicana d’Haïti is one of the longest-running institutions in Haitian music — a northern big-band powerhouse founded in August 1963 in Cap-Haïtien. While the capital’s scene produced the konpa revolution, Tropicana anchored the north with a grand, brass-rich sound that carried its own identity, celebrating its 60th anniversary with official honors from Cap-Haïtien in August 2023. Key figures in the band’s story include Cinna Octavius Jr., Emmanuel Turenne, and Parisien Fils-Aimé. Over six decades, Tropicana has remained a living landmark: a band that outlasted every era, kept the northern sound in the national conversation, and showed that Haitian big-band music could sustain an institution for generations. Milestone recordings and tracks include “Zanmi Camarade,” “Ti Zo,” “Adrienne,” “Sérénade Tropic,” “Super Fête,” and “Bravo Tropic.”
