Boukman Eksperyans

Boukman Eksperyans is the flagship band of the Mizik Rasin (roots) movement — the group that took Haiti’s Vodou-influenced drumming, rara street rhythms, and ancestral chants and carried them onto world stages. Founded in 1978 in Port-au-Prince by Théodore “Lòlò” Beaubrun and Mimerose “Mèmè” Beaubrun, the band fused traditional rhythms with rock, reggae, and konpa instrumentation at a time when such music was marginalized. Their debut album, Vodou Adjae (1991), earned a Grammy nomination, making them international ambassadors of Haitian roots culture. Beyond the music, Lòlò comes from the legendary Beaubrun theatrical dynasty — he grew up performing in classic Haitian satirical stage plays and street theater before leading the band. Key albums: Vodou Adjae (1991), Kalfou Danjere (1992), Libète (Pran Pou Pran’l) (1995), and Revolisyon (1998).
